The sun shinning on my face another very welcome day, working hard and greeting friends, in my usual way
I may be poor but I have everything I need to keep it all together, lots to learn and grow that could go on hopefully forever
My future looks good and I, cant complain, keep saving for a future with every, dollar, getting taller
Cost of living goes up in almost, every way, you keep your chin up to avoid, a bad fate, and seize the day
Keeping healthy, keeping strong, smiles a plenty, knowing right from wrong with feet in motion, the heart sings a song, keeping together, we all got along
Feeling sick and feeling tired, late one day, went home early from work, without much to say
Called the doctor for a visit, for what she could see, if theres anything the body needed, or could forsee
X-rays and blood samples, out the door asking questions and saying nothing, and waiting - the waiting
Bills stack up quick and I dont know what, to do, so I ask for more information but they tell me to, wait longer, and longer
Feeling numb, feeling lost, looking out the window, wondering about the cost, waiting for the call, will dreams get squashed
The news is bad, they say the extent of surgery Ill go through will be quite bad
And the time Ill miss from work, will put me behind leaving me open to what dangers could lurk
And if I survive my life could be likely cut short, so much left undone so many thoughts left to sort
Its hard to focus on what insurance will cover, my face hangs in the balance based on credit and what funds can recover
The insurance denies payment for the operation I need, to poor to raise cash no matter how much I plea
Within a year I will expire, and another person will see their dreams burn in the fire
Trying to find sunshine but being clouded by fate, keep falling behind but they keep raising the rate
Like a hamster cage in motion but going nowhere, life gets constrained by our ever dwindling social welfare
Americans without health insurance are 40% more likely to die, and when you have insurance - it doesnt leave you much to get by
We can go on with our lives praying to whoever it pleases, as our bodies die off at the same time having cures for all the diseases
Is it just too little and a little too late, the story here were left to contemplate a person who could be well but left devastaed, a light that went out too soon and cant be rehabilitated
He knew his life was ending buried underground, wrote 20 christmas cards and gave them to pass around
Now on every christmas there reminded of their son, who was dying of sickness and used the gun
Stories like this have become all too common, your standing at the top and fall to the bottom
We do great things when we stand together, but greed has its way of using doubt as a tether

Our Park Bench
A new park has been made for us to play, kids out of streets in this midsummers day
We needed a place to sit and contemplate, so we petitoned the city for benches to create
Our benches were made and minds relax, it just took a little bit and a temporary tax
First kisses were made and maybe some hearts broken, if these benches could talk we could feel the emotion
More money in the kitty, to keep everyhting all fixed and kept up
Playing games and singing, well kept grass and growing shrubs
Growing crowds and lots of, people everywhere
Running back and forth with, kites flying in the air
All the benches sitting, full with people sitting and smiling
In the morning and the, evening, bodies relax and retiring
From monday, to sunday, joggers move and go through the pathway
And birthdays, and anniversaries, the bench gets used every day
The local factory gets closed and people sit there, and worry
Where did my future go and savings go, moving out in a hurry
The park gets littered and left hard to keep, less money in the city
Benches become beds for those with no money, left with no pity
Wailing sirens and barking dogs, a world turned upside down
De-population says the statician, no taxes to go around
Our park bench breaks and falls apart, people lose their solidarity
Locked doors and ownership, all rentism creats is insularity
We cleaned up our park, put it back together from where we start
Hand in hand - one step at a time, building trust - it takes a lot of heart
Our park bench put back in place, our thoughts sit at rest with a relaxing face
No more hoarding contest, little by little fear ends its arrest
Hope, and jump rope, keeping pace every day
Sit and smile, watch the worls move and play
Hear and listen, see a world weve been missing
See and breathe, relax senses - no more fences
Our park bench is a symbol, of what we do for each other - its very simple

Don't Be Afraid

Dont Be Afraid
Standing in the rain and dreaming sitting in the sun, how many times some have to go through this, just want to break and run
The clouds rarely break, the ground cracks with relief, waiting silent tension, a mind in disbelief
And time...goes slow...holding on...to its shadow
And after every kick and punch, it leaves scares on our back
Look to turn around, the villain hides from its attack
Provoking its tension, to cry victim when it caused the attack
Stupidity run amok, the mind of a broken meglomaniac
And time...goes slow...holding on...to its shadow
and time...goes slow
In group out group, sets the stage, creating conflict, in silent rage
Toxic amusement, looks like fun, finger in the mirror, blame and run
Selective data has its day, everybody loses but denies it anyway
An atomized society loses its grip, with its sanity fiction to fray
This is cower, this is fear, conform to group, standing there
Loss of freedom, loss of choice, life is gone with the loss of its voice
Stranded and idle, frail and thin, the in group loses but claims a win
Deception undetected kept from the lenses, building bigger and higher fences
Takes strength and courage to take a stand, when fear and hate makes it demand
Love is feared from group conception, hate is created from self-deception
But strong legs you can walk through it, hope reforged with a light that can never quit
How many times we have to go through this, to embrace our freedoms very first kiss
So wahtever you do when those that join in fear where hope has strayed, no matter the trick theres solace to be found, so dont be afraid
With every change moving forward, redundant stigma then put into order
Lives get spent with a voice unrelent, heroes defined with feelings left to vent
Taking chances living uncomfortable, guided by a heart that is ungovernable
Racial hatred and gender inequality, still have to struggle with that still constantly
Fear of love, seen as fraility, used to create then denied its reality
Hold your breath, until your death, the violence inside never gets its rest
Follow dictation, from the station, the message is mixed and causes frustration
The blood pumps too fast and reaches heart failure, a life lived never never knowing its true nature
Sink or swim, as choices become very slim and makes the future look quite grim
Modern thoughts still carry old posion, travels generations and still gets its way in
With every freedom we want for each other, fear still makes borders telling us to hide for cover
Those who are brave still hold a candle in the darkness, show us its okay that we can be better than cowardice
Dont be afraid, looking over ones shoulder, walking strong and never losing composure
Remeber behind every face of hate, there could be inside a life ready to change
To be on the right side of history, equal choices to be had for every ethnicity
Breaking the mold can be painful to old ideals, but then again its better than kicking ones heels

Everybody Gets A Chance
"Welcome to the big show, see the people come and go, your chances are slim, but you can try, hey you never know
Roll the dice and pay the price, take out the loan and dont think twice, think sweet dreams of paradise, watch them get crushed in the vise"
Everybody should get a chance, but no they really dont, same old song and dance, driven down an endless road
Everybody should get a chance, to reap what they sowed, but the ever growing price, stops those dreams from coming to unfold
Listen now, we need to get something straight, modern income inequality is getting to great, nothing trickles down and goes through the grate, its never ever too late
We werent born to divide each other, living life looking over our sgoulder, we push kick and love, but fear somehow governs our sense of every other
Everybody should get a chance, but no they really dont, same old song and dance, driven down an endless road
Everybody should get a chance, to reap what they sowed, but the ever growing price, stops those dreams from coming to unfold
As the public gets atomized - time stands still, pessimist thinking then runs up the till, are things getting worse, or making a mountain out of a mole hill
How many Einsteins have come and gone, fell through the crackes and pushed along, dreams sold to debt, let go and settle on
Everybody should get a chance, but no they really dont, same old song and dance, driven down an endless road
Everybody should get a chance, to reap what they sowed, but the ever growing price, stops those dreams from coming to unfold
Our hearts need to be set free like wild fire, filling the airwaves through the amplifier, think create and make, leading others with thoughts to inspire
Its hard to start when others push you down, marked with paint and labeled as a clown, invest wait and see, if your ideals are holding ground
"Oh come on now, everybody gets a chance, just pull up a chair or enjoy the song and dance
If you need help with money, take out another loan, if that doesnt work we can always foreclose your home
Comfort is freedom and labor is a bed of nails, if you have enough money your luck will never fail
Choices are for those who can afford to pay the price, life is a lottery, go ahead and roll the dice"
Listen now, we need to get something straight, modern income inequality is getting to great, nothing trickles down and goes through the grate, its never ever too late
We werent born to divide each other, living life looking over our sgoulder, we push kick and love, but fear somehow governs our sense of every other
It can be a labor of love to really believe in something, working at the goals as the heart gets pumping, read learn and grow, patience is hard but its all or nothing
Every year our lives are getting better, we can always do more as we do it together, work love and sweat, our universal collective endeavor

Lantern
The sun is warm, i can feel it on my face, my birthday today and me and my friends are playing chase
My mom smiles and picks me up off my feet, i wish my father was still alive to see me so upbeat
Running back and forth, stilts, hoops, and leap frog, put a ribbon on his neck and now we were all out chasing the dog
Its 1590 and Im 7 years old, my mother keeps me good and I do what Im told
The food was cooking and I could smell it in the air, it was time for us to eat so we all pulled up a chair
I couldnt find my mother so I hopped back down on my feet, took a look outside and saw her burning alive in the street
All the lights in the world went out, all the love in my heart left with only doubt
My mother was burned alive for heresy and thought she was a witch, the executioner in silver and gold, his actions made him rich
My uncle - the innkeeper - took me into his home and kept me safe, I try to be strong but the bond now broken leaves only a chafe
I work hard at the inn and help keeping things clean, as the years go by my thoughts of love drift away broken and unseen
I still keep the lantern my mother made me on that birthday, although its never been lit - I still keep it close to where I lay
No doves fly here - work all day and night, the silent violence grows stronger and wants a fight
My uncles hand can be heavy - so I stay quiet and wait, Ill play along for now but as I get older Ill be the master of my own fate
And like all youth I grow wild and find my way to trouble, just to feel something out from under that rubble
From the anger created, all love gets sedated - kick punch and steal with wild eyes it makes the situation
And the hopelessness, with its helplessness, and the rage of the blood within me is to hard to suppress
Nothing of love, and nothing of meaning, cant even remember when I stopped dreaming
With my group of friends, well take anything we can, too fast to get caught being chased by angry men
Playing cards in the street, earning coins that I keep, my work at the Inn gives me a bed where I can sleep
But my uncle gets sour, heavy handed with power, says all my ideas are delusions of grandeur
Got caught a few times, stealing bread in the shop, slapped my hands and said that had to stop
I needed a bigger score, for my anger to adore, even when Im in trouble Im still looking for more
In trouble again, my uncle locked me in, not allowed to eat, said my life was sin
Said he could help, with the law off my back, get my life together, and keep it on track
To help with his work, and his group of friends, learn what they do,
and run odds and ends
Then one night he called me in, said tonite Im ready for you to begin, put all your other thoughts aside, your good now to join us - youve been qualified
"Meet us in the barn with those clothes, dont fret now I must impose, the hour here is getting late, dont disappoint me well be lting in wait"
So I went into my room and got myself ready, didnt know what was coming - keeping my hands steady, walked out the steps and into the moonlight, looked at the carriages and saw something wasnt right
Something familiar caught my eye, the gold and silver carriage from years gone by, I could feel it deep in my stomach, that deep inside a horrible thing was coming
Opened the door, a woman tied on the floor, mouth chocked, didnt know what was in store
My uncle winked, this is how, we get rid of evil, to help and save all our people
We will douse her and you will burn her, your sins will be cleansed I must concur
But not before the executioner steps in, reads her fate and then we begin
A revelation unfolds cant think as the world turns dark with no sense of concentration
I now know my uncle was the one who marked my mother into permanent death and damnation
I have the truth now burning my eyes seeing the truth covered up with lies
I throw the torch into the hay and ran out the door behind me for a fast getaway
Running for miles I thought my feet could never stop
Took a job on a ship working hard with a mop
Kept going north to a port where a new life I could start
Got a job at a college where I cleaned and pushed a cart
I dont look behind me - the fear is gone and my life is my own
Keep out of trouble - stick to myself - im free but feel alone
With the darkness behind me and my new life ahead
Be mindfull of others, being carefull where I tread
And so many years later the memories do sometimes haunt
I see my mother on fire and its the love that I want
Little by little, I trust others and let people in
But its when they get too close the fear can begin
Lonliness and then its addiction, drinking myself into submission, I lose myself to its conviction, regret
Walking past stores - looking into the window, my drunken body moves its body in limbo, I see a memory of a gift in the window, forget
My blood grows warm overcome with love, the memory of the lantern I cant get rid of, my birthday gift given by my mother the dove, sweat
The next morning the shop I did come, bought the lantern and gave up rum, lit the lantern as my heart beat like a drum, I said
The love that was once lost is now returned, hate and fear were broken and overturned, I thought it was lost to me and burned
but what was created from pain can again be turned
my light cant be spurned
this love I have earned
this love I have earned
this love I have earned
into the sunset
